POPE:
FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD DAY OF PEACE
Once again, as the new year begins, I want to extend good wishes for
peace to people everywhere. With this Message I would like to propose a
reflection on the theme: Fighting Poverty to Build Peace. Back in 1993,
my venerable Predecessor Pope John Paul II, in his Message for the World
Day of Peace that year, drew attention to the negative repercussions for
peace when entire populations live in poverty.

Straw MP: Global Peace and Unity Event
Throughout my adult life, it has been a privilege to name Muslims
among my very best of friends. I have spent many hours talking with you,
sometimes arguing with you, often laughing with you. I have been
welcomed into your homes. I have been invited to celebrate your
festivals. And I have visited your brothers and sisters across the
Islamic world.

Stigma
the biggest hurdle in battle against AIDS, Ban says

globe, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today.“Stigma
remains the single most important barrier to public action. It is the
main reason too many people are afraid to see a doctor.

Alexander
Solzhenitsyn: An icon of his age
PROPHETS are without honour in their own country—at least until they
die. For most of his adult life in the Soviet Union, Alexander
Solzhenitsyn was persecuted. In exile in the West from 1974, his gloomy
philippics and increasingly turgid prose aroused more bafflement than
appreciation. After he returned to Russia in 1994, he was welcomed but
then ignored. 4. Aug. 08 |

work is for freedom for all ... We say tonight, after nearly 90 years of
life, it is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands
now, I thank you.” 27. June 2008 |

Why is 'peace' a dirty word?
How is that people — most of whom grow up with parents admonishing
them daily to behave with peace and civility — can embrace messages that
snicker at the notion of peace on a wider scale? Most people will live
their entire lives without engaging in murder or acts of war and be
happy for it. 1. Jannuary
